Yesterday the Mets Acquired Robison Cano and Edwin Diaz from the Mariners for Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzack and Minor Leaguers Jarred Kelenic, Gerson Bautista and Justin Dunn. This move was made by the Mets to upgrade their line up and get a consistent closer.
Cano is 36 and is coming off a year in 2018 where he was suspended for 80 games for the use of PED's. In 80 games he hit .303 with 10 HRs and 50 RBIs this is a risky move for the Mets because since Cano signed with the Mariners in 2014 his power numbers have been down hitting over 25 home runs one time in his five years with the Mariners.
Cano might be the household name in this trade but the player that should make the most impact for the Mets in this deal is Edwin Diaz. Diaz will be 25 to start the season and has been the Mariners closer since 2016 he has 109 career saves and a career ERA of 2.64. In 2018 Diaz lead all of baseball with 57 saves and had an ERA of 1.96 this move should really help the Mets in the bullpen which struggled in 2018 with a bullpen ERA of 4.96 which was 28th in all of baseball.
The Mets needed to make a move this offseason seeing that their NL East counterparts the Braves and Phillies have already been busy, Atlanta signing Josh Donaldson and Philadelphia trading for Jean Segura. With this trade, the Mets hope to be improved in 2019 and be contenders in the NL East.
